A Little About My Roots: The Story Behind Yarrow & James
I’m by no means a classically trained floral designer who graduated from a fancy design school. The skills I have today are the result of a lifetime of learning, creating, and growing.
My love for flowers started long before Yarrow & James ever existed. As a teenager, I worked at a retail florist studio, creating Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day arrangements. My mother was a floral designer, so I naturally grew up making homecoming mums and prom corsages, too. You could say flowers have always been part of my story.
My eye for interior design came from my grandmother. I’ve always been drawn to old things with a little history and character, and you can usually find me thrifting, hunting for treasures, and finding new ways to give old pieces a second life. Nearly 90% of my home is filled with vintage and secondhand finds. There’s something special about seeing the beauty and potential in something that someone else might overlook. Bringing a thrifted treasure back to life as a one-of-a-kind vessel for a client is one of my favorite parts of what I do.
Wedding floral design wasn’t necessarily on my radar in the beginning. While we were building our flower farm, I began freelancing for award-winning floral designers throughout the Austin area. I learned the names of countless flowers, gained hands-on experience, and developed a deeper understanding of the art of floral design, all while growing our own flowers from seed.
Then came COVID. As couples began seeking out local flowers and more personal, meaningful details for their weddings, we found ourselves booking more and more floral design work through the farm. What started as an extension of our flower-growing journey slowly grew into something of its own.
To create a more streamlined experience for our couples and give this creative side of the business room to grow, I launched Yarrow & James.
Today, Yarrow & James is where all these pieces of my story come together: my love of flowers, my appreciation for vintage treasures, my eye for thoughtful design, and my connection to the land. My approach has never been about following a formula or recreating the same design over and over. It’s about creating something intentional, artful, and deeply personal to each couple.
I may not have a fancy floral design degree hanging on my wall, but I do have years of hands-on experience, a lifetime of inspiration, and a genuine love for the work I get to do. And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
